I really only use the "modern rigs" for FT8 and for when I "absolutely have to get the contact" - which is usually the IC-7300
I do love having an 8-position patch bay in the main position though - it's nice to so quickly and easily shift from one great old rig to another. It performs admirably and stands up against either of my "modern rigs" (IC-7300, FT-950) but it just doesn't have as much "soul" as the Omni. I admire the TR-7 for what it represents: game-changing all solid state "no tune all bands including WARC" with digital display, sold at a time when most radios on the air were still all tubes and all the other brand new 100-watt rigs had tube finals. It's just buttery smooth in every way - how the tuning works, the receive audio, the filters - it's just an amazing piece of gear. I'm quite a happy camper - $200 seemed pretty good price IMO (granted, "local guy special deal" but I'll take it - not going to be up for resale any time soon!)Ĭlick to expand.Of those two, the Omni VI is IMO the hands-down winner. I still have to work it into the CW keying system but for now, just enjoying tuning the bands and modes and learning about it.Īny IC-756PRO (not II, or III version!) thoughts out there? Experiences? anyone have a "Nifty Manual" for it just to make all the settings be closer at hand?įor now, it's in full rotation - off to "Work all States" and just enjoy it on CW and SSB chatting and such. What a fun rig!! Yes - it's old and I know they are prone to display issues (mine has none) but in just the last 24 hours it's now become a mainstay on my "8-radio patch bay of Classic Transceivers" in the main operating position. This rig came across my transom 3 days ago - offered at $200 from the original owner getting out of ham radio - a very nice chap who lives but a few miles from me.
